It’s a fact that Maldives has the highest divorce rate in the world, and lot of Maldivians talk about as well. Alarmingly, the figure is way higher than the rate of any other country. The figure speaks for itself. But, what could be the factors “contributing” to this world record?
Actually, I’m rather new to the concept of marriage/divorce :S. Maybe you guys could help me understand what could causing this. Few things that come to mind are:
1- Lack of awareness and higher education in the country.
2- Marriage to please parents
It happens a quite a lot in Maldives, and usually doesn’t last long.
3- Women are underrepresented in the workforce.
Maldives has a long history of women growing up to be just only housewives. Though it has changed a bit over the years, it is still seen and practice that way – maybe not as much in Male’, but definitely in the outer islands.
4- Ease of getting a divorce.
In Islamic Sharia pronouncement of a few words can settle a divorce. In a community where “divorce” is no different from quitting a job – the way it is seen socially – in many instances these words might be used unwisely. I believe the regulation of divorce has changed a bit.
5- Trust, respect and loyalty are unvalued.
Hoo-ha… this is a huge topic!
6- Marriage at YOUNG AGE
Don't get me started. Look around you; friends, family, co-workers - its true! Few guys in mid 20s are mature and/or grown up to be heading a family. It usually ends with a pregnant lady or a little kid or two - whom, most of the time, have to find a way to bringing up a family on her own while the proud dad flies around looking for "exposed nectar". Is that outrageous? :|
7- …and etc!! Don’t hunt me down
There’s a lot more, but I got to run. Interesting topic, isn’t it?
What have you got to say?
Cheers!
i would the say that the main problem is the housing situation, especially in male'.
ReplyDeletehusband and wife do not have any privacy at all – for their love or for their fights.
a small disagreement would be public the minute it happens and this most of the time does not help, i think.
but i agree, this is not the only reason. misguided notion of religion (islam does not encourage divorce), societal acceptability of divorce as a norm, convenience marriages, immature marriages.... this list can go on.
Ibn Batuta, the famed Moroccan traveler who provides the earliest written account of life in Maldives, noted that marriage in Maldives was like the national past-time. Well, atleast something close to that...)
ReplyDeleteI learned that fact from the 2002 Guinness World Records Book. And I wholeheartedly agree with causes 4 and 6. Divorce laws need to be amended and so does society's thinking.
ReplyDeleteminr - that's a very good point, and would be a substantial factor... the list is so long..
ReplyDeletejaa - that's interesting and a witty comment too :)
fizan - Yeah. What's doesn't required change? Thanks :)
This is what article I love to read it tells more on divorce so it better to read if you would like to know more about it.
ReplyDeleteCauses Of Divorce
I think the most important thing to solve this problem is to learn the beautiful teaching of Islam. hence Islam is the solution for the humanity. and it is the equation to solve the equation of the simple problems. isn't?
ReplyDeleteI always wonder about the high divorce rate in the maldives.few minutes ago i discussed wid ma frnd abt the possible causes for it.we noted down a big list of it.Than i thought for searching about it on net.nd here we go wid a big list including the reasons i too noted..really, being a maldivian,i'm really disapointed about this dicorce issue..But if we work together we can solve these issues. Need to aware people. And i strongly believe in the points( immature marriages and ease of divorce)
ReplyDeleteI'm living in Maldives since several years working as an educator. I'm afraid to say that the reasons that youy listed above doesnt really exist. It is always better to understand the community better before you attempt such an article.
ReplyDeleteThere is a saying in Sanskrit:
Sahasram Vad Maa likha!
Tell it thousand time, but don't write for at least a small majority of who read would believe it is true.

Divorce is a Rampant Epidemic especially when the government & military (NATO) is behind it!
ReplyDeleteI went to a father’s group in Texas (just north of Fort Hood) where some ex-military west pointer gave some real eye-opening comments. He basically said that the current Divorce process, legislation, court system and military is all one scheme that was put into play around the early 1960‘s. It was put in place for the Vietnam War, that’s when the divorces started to sky-rocket across the country (Google statistics). That in addition, it was also designed to be one huge cash-cow to lure greedy lawyers to facilitate and destroy more families on the civilian side to get enough statistics to make it comparable to the military statistics. However the military numbers are still much higher. That is why they then modified the scheme to use on police nationwide to raise the civilian stats as most are ex-military and won’t suspect anything wrong.
It is designed to send “single” male soldiers without family responsibilities to war and deny ex-wives any long-term financial support that was initially and may still be coming from the military/ pentagon’s money pockets. This is why laws traditionally have been favoring women. Women are lured to divorce partners with both positive and negatives reinforcements. The positive is they get the kids, the house, money in many forms-child support etc thus they benefit in the short term. To the military, the soldiers wives are expendable as are the soldiers and even their children! Simply the less money the military spends on wives, kids, ex-soldiers, the medical bills etc, the more they have for their drones, guns, or bullets. The scheme is very very complicated but based on very slow very subtle psy-ops brainwashing tactics followed by Machiavellian divide and conquer restraining orders. He said that any Freedom of Information request will gradually reveal key pieces of data that when analyzed together with confirm all this. Talking about this among other soldiers would also reveal stuff, so they came up with “leave your family problems at home” and the “zero tolerance” to divorce and get the spouses or soldiers out of the service quickly before they talk and expose the scheme. Many times this leads to actual suicides or apparent “suicides” to silence those that know too much. This is also the reason why the Pentagon does not want to release documents related to divorce. Part of the even bigger Military-Industrial complex. Similar schemes used throughout the world pushed through United Nations facades.
Basically makes wives and soldier fight and hate each other. The scheme basically exploits women’s emotional traits to spread itself to other victims. The media contributes to the fear mongering and makes things worst. Fear (PTSD etc) makes women fear for their safety or some play the helpless damsel in distress thus they then go pleading to the oh-so-willing authorities who provide them with military issued cookie cutter divorce packets to take to a civilian lawyer. They do this to hide where the process initially starts.
